UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a phone call with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, emphasized the necessity of respecting the principles of international law and avoiding escalation of tensions, noting that there is no doubt about Iran’s right to self-defense.
Speaking in a telephone call with Araghchi, Guterres stressed preventing the spread of conflicts and reduce their humanitarian and security consequences in the region.
Guterres, termed aggressive attacks by the US and the Zionist regimes against Iran as obvious.
He emphasized the necessity of respecting the principles of international law and avoiding escalation of tensions, noting that there is no doubt about Iran’s right to self-defense.
Meanwhile, Araghchi elaborated on the various dimensions of the US-Israeli war crimes.
He noted that civilian sites, including schools, hospitals, residential areas, as well as historical buildings and monuments, had been targeted in these attacks.
Such actions constitute a clear violation of international law and the fundamental principles of humanitarian law, he stated.
Referring to the human consequences and extensive damages caused by these attacks, he called for a decisive and explicit condemnation of these actions by the international community.
Araghchi underlined Iran's inherent right to defend itself against this imposed war.
Iran had previously warned all relevant parties in the region in the event of a US military action against Iran, it would inevitably target all US facilities and bases in the region, which would lead to the spread of war throughout the entire region, he said.
Such actions are taken within the framework of the right to legitimate defense and based on recognized norms of international law.
Iran considers defending the security and lives of its citizens a fundamental and non-negotiable responsibility, Araghchi said.
Pointing to the UN responsibilities regarding the maintenance of international peace and security, he emphasized the serious expectation of the Iranian government and nation from the UN Secretary-General and the UN Security Council to adopt stronger and more responsible positions in explicitly condemning the crimes committed.
The silence or insufficient reactions to such actions could pave the way for continued instability and escalation of tensions in the region, he said.
